Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in May 2021 were an estimated 9.2 million metric tons (Mt), a 5.6% increase from shipments in May 2020, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 40.3 Mt, a 6.5% increase from those for the same period in 2020.
The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in May 2021 were, in descending order, Missouri, California, Texas, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 39% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Georgia) received 37% of May shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 201,000 metric tons (t) for the month, a 3.4% increase from those in May 2020. Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 969,000 t, a 2.6% increase from those for the same period in 2020. The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these states received 54% of May shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 7.3 Mt in May 2021, an 8.0% increase from production in May 2020. Production for the year through May totaled an estimated 29.7 Mt, a slight decrease from the same period in 2020. The leading clinker-producing states for the month were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Pennsylvania; these states accounted for 49% of May clinker production.
